The Union cabinet on Tuesday approved three labor codes that the government describes as important labor reforms. All three codes, which involve social security, occupational safety, health and working conditions, and industrial relations, will be placed before the parliament in the upcoming monsoon session, said a report by NDTV.

Last year, the government decided to condense the 44 labor laws into four codes to help foreign companies do business in India to fight the economic recession.

The code on wages was one of them and it has already been passed by the parliament.

The remaining three codes were sent to a Standing Committee and have now been approved by the Cabinet, according to the NDTV report.

The first code is the social security code that involves provident funds, maternity benefits, and insurance. The next is the industrial relation codes that will combine laws on industrial disputes, trade unions, and others. The last one is the occupational health and safety code that involves industrial safety and welfare laws, according to the report.

Six states revised the labor laws, which mainly focused on longer working hours instead of a regular eight-hour shift.

Further, Rajasthan passed a notification earlier this year, extending working hours for three months but said laborers will be paid overtime for the extra hours.

The Punjab government has asked the state's industry minister to take all possible welfare measures for workers.
