Bangladesh is celebrating the 101st birth anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Bangladesh on Wednesday embarked on 10-day celebrations to mark 50 years of its independence and birth anniversary of its liberation hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Ahead of his visit to Bangladesh on 26 March to mark Mujib Borsho celebrations and the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s liberation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a hero for all Indians on his 101st birth anniversary.

“My heartfelt homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a champion of human rights and freedom, on his birth anniversary. He is a hero for all Indians too. It will be my honour to visit Bangladesh later this month for the historic #MujibBorsho celebrations,” Prime Minister Modi said in a message on Twitter.

On the eve of 101st birth anniversary of Bangabandhu, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon all to take a vow in the Mujib Year to take Bangladesh to newer heights in the international arena and transform the country into a safe and peaceful abode for the next generation.

In a bid to make the celebrations global in nature, dignitaries, among whom are a number of heads of state and government in South Asia, will begin joining the celebrations from Wednesday.

A total of 5 heads of states and government are set to join during the 10-day long celebrations Indian Prime Minister would visit Bangladesh on 26-27 March to participate in the twin celebrations.

Prime Minister Modi's visit will also mark the 50th year of India-Bangladesh bilateral relations.

This will be the Indian Prime Minister’s first visit to a foreign country since the COVID-19 pandemic's outbreak. This reflected the priority that India attaches to Bangladesh, said a Ministry of External Affairs in a press release issued on Tuesday.

During the visit, the Indian Prime Minister will attend the National Day programme of Bangladesh on March 26 as the guest of honour.

The programme of Prime Minister Modi, apart from holding bilateral consultations with her Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina, also includes a call on the President of Bangladesh Md. Abdul Hamid.

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh A.K. Abdul Momen will call on Prime Minister Modi during the visit.

On Wednesday, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reached Bangladesh on a three-day state visit. He is the first head of state to arrive in Dhaka for Bangladesh’s twin celebrations.

Followed by Maldives, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Nepal Bidhya Devi Bhandari are scheduled to visit Bangladesh and participate in the events marking the occasion.
