In August, India will serve as the President of the 15-nation United Nations Security Council

UN General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir has commended India for holding a majority of Security Council meetings in-person, as well as for the rich programme of work of the Security Council for the month of August.

On Wednesday, Bozkir held an in-person coordination meeting with TS Tirumurti, Permanent Representative of India to the UN and the President of the Security Council for the month of August informed a UN statement.

Tweeting about the meeting the President of the UNGA said, “I was pleased to meet with H.E. T.S. Tirumurti @ambtstirumurti of @IndiaUNNewYork as President of the Security Council for the month of August 2021 to receive information about the UNSC programme of work for August. #UNGA75.”

Ambassador Tirumurti briefed the PGA on the upcoming main activities to be undertaken during India`s Presidency of the Council in August, focusing on High-level Open debates on Maritime Security, and on Technology and Peacekeeping, as well as a High-level briefing on the Threats to International Peace and Security caused by Terrorist Acts.

They also discussed the preparation of the High-level week of the 76th Session of the General Assembly, the UN statement added.

Finally, the two diplomats underscored commitment to working together throughout the month of August 2021, it noted.

Starting from January this year, India was elected for a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the powerful 15-nation United Nations Security Council.

In August, India will serve as the President of the important UN body. The presidency of the Council is held by each of the members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the member states’ names.
