Opening up of foreign universities in India is in line with the 2020 National Education Policy
Two Australian universities are set to begin functioning in Gujarat next year, giving a boost to the objective of ‘Study in India’ envisaged under the 2020 National Education Policy. 
 
Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan along with his Australian counterpart Jason Clare visited the site for the upcoming campuses of Wollongong and Deakin Universities at GIFT City, Gandhinagar on Tuesday (November 7, 2023). They were briefed on the developments of the campus and future plans.
 
The ministers attended an event, Arambh (The Beginning), formally announcing the opening of campuses at the GIFT City.
 
Pradhan said that foreign university campuses will facilitate ‘Study In India’ and also create a vibrant, diverse and inclusive educational environment as envisioned in the NEP 2020.
 
The Australian Education Minister shared information about the development on social media platform X. 
 
"International education is not a one way street. It’s not just about students coming to Australia, it’s about Australian universities going to them," the Australian Education Minister posted on X.
 
".@Deakin and @UOW are the first international universities to be approved to set up a standalone campus in India," he added.
 
According to Clare, the two universities will start teaching next year. "This highlights the regard with which our universities are held and the strength of the relationship between our two great countries," he wrote on X.
 
While in Gandhinagar, both the Ministers addressed a conclave ‘Research Dialogue: New Horizons in Research Collaboration’. The aim of the conclave was to identify innovative opportunities for deepening bilateral collaboration in a thriving research ecosystem. The Australian delegation, senior representatives of key Indian higher education and research institutions, and other dignitaries were also present at the conclave.
