During his address, Prime Minister Modi voices the concerns of the Global South
Participating in the COP-28 Presidency’s Session on "Transforming Climate Finance” in Dubai, UAE on December 1, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need to make affordable climate finance available to developing countries.
At the same time, he called for developed countries to eliminate their carbon footprint by 2050.
"During his address, Prime Minister voiced the concerns of the Global South and reiterated the urgency of making the means of implementation, particularly climate finance, available to the developing countries to achieve their climate ambitions and implement their NDCs," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
The event focussed on making climate finance more available, accessible, and affordable to developing countries.
Prime Minister Modi called for the COP-28 to deliver on the following issues related to Climate Finance:
1. Progress in New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance
2. Replenishment of Green Climate Fund & Adaptation Fund
3. Affordable Finance to be made available by MDBs for Climate Action
4. Developed countries must eliminate their carbon footprint before 2050
In his address, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the operationalisation of Loss and Damage Fund and establishment of the UAE climate Investment Fund at COP-28.
Later PM Modi and UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan co-hosted a High-level Event on Green Credits Programme at COP-28. The event also saw participation of @SwedishPM, President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique & @eucopresident @CharlesMichel.
"The programme has been conceptualised as a mechanism to incentivise voluntary pro-planet actions. It envisions issue of Green Credit for plantations on waste lands and river catchment areas to rejuvenate them" MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a post on social media platform X.
According to Bagchi, PM Modi invited the nations to join this initiative which will promote global cooperation through environment positive actions. A web platform, which would serve as a repository of policies and best practices that incentivize environment-friendly actions, was also launched.
Earlier, in his departure statement in New Delhi on Thursday (November 30, 2023), Prime Minister Modi said India had walked the talk when it comes to climate action.
"Our achievements in different sectors like renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, energy conservation, Mission LiFE are testament to the commitment of our people towards mother Earth," Prime Minister Modi stated.
According to the Prime Minister, India has always laid emphasis on climate action even as it pursues social and economic development.
