It will be PM Modi’s first official trip to Russia ever since Moscow carried out military offensive against Ukraine and this will be also the first visit by an Indian PM to Austria in 41 years
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a three-day official visit to Russia and Austria from July 08, the Ministry External Affairs said on Thursday.

Visiting Moscow on July 8-9 at the invitation of the Russian President, Prime Minister Modi will hold 22nd India-Russia annual summit with Vladimir Putin during his two-day official trip.

This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Russia since the latter carried out a military attack on Ukraine in February 2022.

“The leaders will review the entire range of multifaceted relations between the two countries and exchange views on contemporary regional and global issues of mutual interest,” the MEA said.

The annual summit between the Indian Prime Minister and the Russian President is the highest institutionalized dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between New Delhi and Moscow.

Annual summits have taken place alternatively in India and Russia. The last summit was held on December 6, 2021 in New Delhi where 28 MoUs and agreements were signed.

The last in-person bilateral meeting between the two leaders took place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in September 2022.

Since then, the two leaders have maintained regular contact through telephonic conversations to review progress on bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

In 2024, the two leaders held telephonic conversations on three occasions on January 15, March 20, and June 5.

Prime Minister Modi had last visited Russia in 2019 for an economic forum in the far eastern port of Vladivostok.

After concluding the annual summit in Moscow, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Austria on July 09-10, 2024.  This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years.

He will call on Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and hold talks with Chancellor of Austria Karl Nehammer. The Prime Minister and the Austrian Chancellor will also address business leaders from India and Austria.

Prime Minister Modi will interact with members of the Indian community in Moscow as well as in Vienna.
