The two leaders agreed to work towards early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-UK Free Trade Agreement
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday (July 6, 2024) and congratulated him after the Labour Party's victory in the election.

"Prime Minister congratulated him on assuming charge as Prime Minister of UK and a remarkable victory of the Labour Party in the election," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

Both leaders recalled the historic relations between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen and advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UK. "The two leaders agreed to work towards early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-UK Free Trade Agreement," the MEA stated about the conversation. 

According to the MEA, the two sides agreed to continue to promote close people-to-people ties, appreciating the positive contributions of the Indian community in the social, economic and political development of the UK. During the course of the conversation, Prime Minister Modi also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Starmer for an early visit to India.

Prime Minister Modi had earlier posted a congratulatory message on X, formerly Twitter, after Starmer's victory in the UK general elections.

"Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to @Keir_Starmer on the remarkable victory in the UK general elections. I look forward to our positive and constructive collaboration to further strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in all areas, fostering mutual growth and prosperity," PM Modi said.

He also thanked outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his "admirable leadership" and his contributions in deepening the India-UK ties.

"Thank you @RishiSunak for your admirable leadership of the UK, and your active contribution to deepen the ties between India and the UK during your term in office. Best wishes to you and your family for the future," PM Modi said on X.
