Currently, 993 kilometers of metro rail are operational across 23 cities in India
India is poised to achieve a major milestone in urban mobility, as it prepares to become the country with the second-largest metro network globally. Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal shared this vision during a Consultative Committee meeting of Members of Parliament attached to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) held in New Delhi on Wednesday (December 18, 2024).
Current and Future Metro Network Expansion
In his address, Manohar Lal highlighted the significance of urban mobility in managing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization. Currently, 993 kilometers of metro rail are operational across 23 cities in India. Additionally, another 997 kilometers of metro network are under construction in 28 cities.
"The metro network has emerged as one of the most practical, green, and reliable modes of transportation in India’s urban areas. It is crucial for ensuring sustainable urban development," he stated.
Regional Rapid Transit Systems and PM-eBus Sewa Scheme
In addition to metro projects, India is also investing in Regional Rapid Transit Systems (RRTS), which aim to connect major cities and urban centers to create an integrated urban mobility ecosystem. The Consultative Committee was briefed on the funding pattern and progress of RRTS projects, which are expected to revolutionize regional connectivity.
The PM-eBus Sewa scheme was another focus area during the meeting. Under this initiative, 10,000 electric buses (e-buses) will be deployed across cities with populations ranging from 3 to 40 lakh. Key features of the scheme include:
Deployment of e-buses under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Support for 10 years of sustainable bus operations.
Development and upgradation of bus depots to house the new fleet.
Enhancement of behind-the-meter power infrastructure to support e-buses.
This program not only addresses the growing demand for urban public transport but also aligns with India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable mobility.
One Nation One Card Initiative
A groundbreaking innovation in India’s urban mobility is the ‘One Nation One Card’ initiative. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2019, the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) enables seamless travel across metro, rail, bus, and other public transport systems with a single card. This initiative exemplifies the government’s vision to simplify and integrate public transport for millions of commuters.
The central and state governments are actively working on metro projects in major cities, including Delhi, Jaipur, Patna, and Lucknow. The Delhi Metro, India’s flagship metro system, continues to set an example for urban mobility solutions in other cities. Upcoming metro projects in smaller urban centers are expected to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and improve accessibility for residents.
During the MoHUA meeting, Members of Parliament raised critical issues pertaining to urban mobility, such as last-mile connectivity, passenger comfort, and the need for scaling up metro operations. Manohar Lal directed officials to review the suggestions from MPs and incorporate them into the ministry’s plans.
India’s efforts to expand its metro network and urban transport systems are part of a larger vision to promote sustainable and efficient urban mobility. By 2025, with nearly 2,000 kilometers of metro rail operational or under construction in 51 cities, India will firmly establish itself as a global leader in urban mobility solutions. Initiatives like the PM-eBus Sewa scheme and ‘One Nation One Card’ will further complement these efforts, ensuring cleaner, quicker, and more reliable transport options for urban dwellers.
The integration of homegrown technologies and the emphasis on indigenisation through programs like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat are expected to bolster local economies while reducing dependency on imports. As India moves forward, its urban transport infrastructure is set to serve as a model for sustainable development worldwide.
India’s rapidly expanding metro network and innovative urban mobility solutions are transforming the way cities function. The government’s focus on creating a seamless, sustainable, and efficient transport system promises a brighter future for urban residents, making travel faster, cleaner, and more accessible. The second-largest metro network in the world is just the beginning of India’s ambitious journey toward redefining urban mobility.
