India-US ties have evolved into a Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit the US from December 24-29, 2024 in what will be the first high-level engagement between the two nations following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.

Announcing the visit on Monday (December 23, 2024), the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said EAM Jaishankar will meet counterparts to discuss key bilateral, regional, and global matters. He is also scheduled to chair a conference of India’s Consul Generals in the US, the MEA added.

EAM Jaishankar had earlier said the India-US relationship would “only grow” irrespective of the outcome of the US President elections.

Responding to a question during a joint press conference alongside Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra on November 5, 2024, he pointed to the steady growth in the bilateral relationship over the past five US presidencies, including Trump's. On Quad, EAM Jaishankar said it had been revived under the previous Trump presidency in 2017.

“We have actually seen steady progress in our relationship with the U.S. over the last five presidencies, including an earlier Trump presidency. So, when we look at the American election, you know we are very confident that whatever the verdict, our relationship with the United States will only grow,” he said when asked about the possibility of Trump winning the election in the US.

“In terms of the Quad, I remind that Quad was actually revived under a Trump presidency in 2017. It was then moved from the level of a Permanent Secretary to a Minister also during the Trump presidency. It's also interesting that in the midst of Covid, when physical meetings had pretty much stopped, one of the rare meetings of Foreign Ministers was of the Quad in Tokyo in 2020," EAM Jaishankar added.

On the other hand, congratulating “friend” Donald Trump on his “historic election victory” in the US Presidential Election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said he looks forward to renewing the collaboration between the two countries to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership.

In a statement on social media platform X on November 6, 2024, Prime Minister Modi also said that India and the US should work to promote global peace, stability, and prosperity as Trump builds on the successes of his previous term as US President.
