India and Japan have a Special Strategic and Global Partnership since 2014
India and Japan continued to build on their longstanding partnership in the realms of disarmament, non-proliferation, and export control with their 10th round of consultations, which took place in Tokyo on April 23, 2024.
The two sides exchanged views on developments in the areas of disarmament and non-proliferation relating to nuclear, chemical and biological domains, outer space security, non-proliferation issues, conventional weapons and export control, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
The Indian delegation was led by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs) from the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Japanese delegation was headed by Katsuro Kitagawa, Director-General for Disarmament, Non-proliferation, and Science Department from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The latest round of consultations come less than two months after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar completed a productive three-day visit to Japan.
During his visit from March 7 to 9, 2024, EAM Jaishankar held the 16th India-Japan Strategic Dialogue with Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoko Kamikawa. They reviewed the broad canvas of India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, including political exchanges, trade, investment, infrastructure and technology collaboration, developmental coordination; defence and security cooperation as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
The two Ministers agreed to make the relationship responsive to contemporary demands and foster better understanding between our two peoples, the MEA said after the meeting.
EAM Jaishankar also called on Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and briefed him about recent developments in the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
2024 marks 10 years of the Tokyo Declaration for India - Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
According to the declaration, "The two Prime Ministers affirmed their shared belief that at a time of growing turmoil, tensions and transitions in the world, a closer and stronger strategic partnership between India and Japan is indispensable for a prosperous future for their two countries and for advancing peace, stability and prosperity in the world, in particular, in the inter-connected Asia, Pacific and Indian Ocean Regions".
